Karl Wachter is Magnetar’s General Counsel and oversees the firm’s global Legal and Compliance functions. He serves as a member of the firm's Management, Valuation, and Operations Committees.
Prior to joining Magnetar, from October 2007 to August 2008, Karl served as General Counsel to Diamond Lake Investment Group LP. Prior to Diamond Lake, he served as General Counsel to Amaranth Group Inc. from December 2001 to September 2007. From June 2000 to December 2001, Karl was a Vice President and Assistant General Counsel at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia Inc. He began his legal career in September 1997 as an Associate in the Derivatives and Financial Products group at with Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP in New York.
Karl earned a Juris Doctor with Honors from the University of Chicago Law School and a Master of Arts in International Affairs from George Washington University, where he was an Elliot School Fellow. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honors from New York University.
